Tracey and Bruce, the rangers at Tuolumne Meadows, have moved on (as of the '06-'07 season), alas. You can look at their previous year's winter notes here: Tuolumne Conditions

The bulletin board had to be shut down because of spam. Meanwhile, you can email me current conditions and I'll post them here. molti ringraziamenti!

Surprising news from HW. Conditions are actually good. Some powder is holding out in nooks and crannies from a small dusting a week ago. Not the ice rink you'd expect. A series of storms is expected starting 2/7.

This just in from Peter Grace:

The skiing conditions last weekend at Ostrander Hut were surprisingly good. We thought that they would be awful. We skied in Horizon Ridge all the same. There were some bare patches but the snow was good which suggested promise at the hut.

On Saturday, we asked Howard Weamer, the hut guardian what the conditions were like and here he is on full force:

We then skied down. Howard confirming the conditions

There are further videos of Howard skiing the powder.

Saturday night was warm. The bare patches were bigger going out Horizon Ridge. We asked Howard about going out Merced Crest and he recommended waiting until someone else had skied the route.

In all it was a surpassingly good weekend and we would have been poorer had we bailed.

Pete

Got a foot of new snow at the Hut. High winds on the ridge. HW says it's skiable all the way there. Take your rock skis! Merry Christmas to all.

Fairly heavy rain falling at lower elevations in the Sierra. Predictions are for 12" to 18" of snow at high elevations through tomorrow (Friday).

Just talked to HW who's at the Hut. The road is rolled and track set. No bare spots. He came in Horizon on about 12" of very loose powder, then started glopping up on Heart Attack in spots where the sun had hit. A few successful skates on the frozen lake, though probably the last of the season before a large storm hits tomorrow.
